Seminar

Translating Research into Impact – Perspectives from UK Universities

Department of Pharmacology & Pharmacy
 When:

27th February 2026 (Friday at 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm)

Speaker:
Dr David Collier
Business and Strategy Consultant

Abstract:
Why should universities translate biomedical research beyond basic science into new therapeutics & diagnostics (from bench to bedside), and how can they deliver on this mandate?

Increasingly, universities are focusing not just on their traditional role of Education and Basic Research, but on two additional pillars: Translational Research – finding real-world uses for fundamental knowledge; and Knowledge Exchange – the delivery of societal impact from university research.

Collaborating with the biomedical industry (pharma, biotech and others) can be a great way to deliver Translational Research and Knowledge Exchange. However, such collaborations are not always straightforward, as different mechanisms of university-industry engagement (e.g. Sponsored Research, Joint Grant Awards, Consultancy) come with their own advantages and challenges.

In this seminar, Dr David Collier will draw on his 15 years’ UK university experience, providing examples of successful and less successful university-industry collaborations. He will present the case for working with commercial partners to deliver expedited impact through Translational Research and Knowledge Exchange, and for the involvement of specialist university business staff to manage relationships with industry stakeholders.

This seminar is designed for: academics, professional services staff seeking practical insights into effective university–industry collaboration.
