Seminar series — Drug Delivery and Translational Medicine

Exploring cells with nanoneedles

Department of Pharmacology & Pharmacy
 When:

27 October 2026 (Tuesday) at 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Speaker:
Dr. Ciro Chiappini

Reader in BioNano Engineering,
Associate Dean for Impact,
King's College London, United Kingdom

Abstract:
Nanoneedles offer minimally perturbing access to living cells, creating new opportunities for intracellular delivery and sensing. They can carry genetic material, proteins and nanoparticles into cells that are often difficult to work with, including stem and immune cells. They can also deliver materials directly to tissues such as the skin and eye. Beyond delivery, nanoneedles can sample cells repeatedly without harming them, allowing the tracking of molecular changes in living tissue as disease develops or treatment takes effect. This talk explores their potential in gene therapy, cell engineering, and the study of treatment response.

Bio:
Dr. Ciro Chiappini is Reader in BioNano Engineering and Associate Dean for Impact at King’s College London. His research combines nanotechnology, bioengineering and cell biology to develop new approaches to advanced therapies and spatial biology. His team is advancing nanoneedle technologies for gene delivery and editing in inherited skin and eye diseases, cell engineering, and repeated molecular sampling of living tissues. He also develops nanomaterials for regenerative medicine. His research has been supported by the ERC Starting Grant, UKRI, and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Before joining King’s, he held Newton International and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowships at Imperial College London. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He has authored more than 70 publications and is an inventor on five patents.
