Abstract:
As interdisciplinary integration deepens, a growing number of scholars navigate research transitions and refine their research trajectories. As an M.D. pivoting mid-career into biomaterials and nanomedicine, I have experienced the thrill of interdisciplinary exploration while grappling with the challenge of defining my academic niche. In this talk, I will sketch my academic journey: from emulating studies on “conventional” multifunctional drug delivery systems to identifying my unique research focus—the interactions between biomaterials/drug carriers and biological systems—where I fully leverage my biomedical expertise. Using polyethylene glycol (PEG) and its derivatives as model systems, I will then share three intriguing research stories investigating interactions between PEG-modified carriers/biomaterials and biological entities at cellular, tissue/organismal, and human population levels, respectively.
Bio:
Prof. Meihua Sui received her M.D. and Ph.D. from Zhejiang University (ZJU). In 2002, she joined the Medical University of South Carolina, initially as a postdoctoral fellow and later as a Research Assistant Professor. Since 2009, Prof. Sui held appointments as Professor and Principal Investigator, successively, at ZJU’s College of Chemical and Biological Engineering and at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital, before taking up her current position in 2020. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on nanomedicine, cancer precision medicine and immunology. Prof. Sui is a recipient of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and a key contributor for the discovery of two targeted anticancer drugs (ensartinib/X-396 and vorolanib/X-82).
